So Giving Tuesday is a day when people are encouraged to do something good for others, whether it’s donating money to a worthy cause, volunteering their time, or just doing something nice for someone. It’s a chance to “give back” and make the world a little bit better. 

The event is held on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. This year it is going to fall on November 29th. 

Giving Tuesday started in 2012 in response to all the commercialism and capitalism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It was created as a day to encourage people to focus on giving instead of getting. And it seems to be working! Giving Tuesday has been growing in popularity and scope every year since its inception. 

What is the purpose of nonprofits celebrating this global giving day?

Nonprofits celebrate Giving Tuesday to raise money and awareness for their cause. It’s an excellent opportunity for them to connect with new donors and volunteers and to show their supporters the impact their donations have made.

However, this year Giving Tuesday will be even more critical for non-profits as they look to rebound from the effects of Covid-19. The pandemic has devastated many organizations, with charities seeing a decrease in donations and an increase in need.

Giving Tuesday presents a chance for nonprofits to get back on their feet and continue doing their vital work. By connecting with potential donors and raising awareness about their cause, nonprofits can start to rebuild what might have been lost during these difficult times.

Different causes NPOs fight for

Various non-profit organizations (NPOs) are out there fighting for multiple causes. Here are just a sampling of some of the different types of causes that NPOs support: 

Hunger and Humanitarian Rights

Hunger is one of the most solvable problems in the world, and yet nearly 870 million people go to bed hungry every night. That’s more than 1 in 9 people on earth. Meanwhile, donors and governments are increasingly focused on national security issues and perceived threats, rather than on solving urgent global problems such as hunger.

Nonprofit organizations are essential to filling the gap created by government disinterest and donor fatigue by spotlighting these issues, mobilizing public opinion, and advocating for change. They also provide much-needed food assistance, education, training, and other life-saving interventions to those who are suffering in silence. 

Animal Welfare Organizations

These types of NPOs seek to protect animals from cruelty and abuse and work towards improving the overall welfare of animals. They may also lobby for animal rights and better living conditions. Examples include the Humane Society, PETA, World Wildlife Fund, etc. 

Environmental Conservation Organizations 

These NPOs work to protect the environment and promote sustainable living practices. They may also lobby for stricter environmental regulations, or be involved in grassroots organizing to clean up local communities.

LGBTQ+ Rights

They believe everyone deserves to be treated equally, no matter who they are or what they do.

NPOs are usually founded by people who have experienced discrimination, so they know firsthand how harmful it can be. They also understand that discrimination affects not just the individual but their friends, family, and community. That’s why NPOs work tirelessly to promote acceptance and equality for all, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Education Rights, especially for Girl Child

In developed countries like the USA, access to education is often taken for granted. However, millions of children in developing countries do not have access to quality education. This lack of access can perpetuate the cycle of poverty and prevent children from reaching their full potential. 

NPOs support marginalized groups and work to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to gain a quality education. 

Top NPOs fighting for education rights include UNESCO, UNICEF, World Vision, and Save the Children.

There are now over 70 countries around the world participating in Giving Tuesday. As per research by NationalHoliday.com, 25% per cent of Americans plan on participating in Giving Tuesday this year.
